About Us

Nuanced Mormon Ministries was created out of a growing feeling of neccesity for an alternative space where those of us who still love parts of the Latter-Day Saint faith or who still see the Book of Mormon as scripture can connect, learn, share, and grow together outside of the mainstream church. This was an idea for a long time, but after the church filed its Amicus Brief regarding their desire for the supreme court to revoke protected class status for transgender citizens, it became apparent that it was time to start the ministry.

NMM is dedicated to creating a safe, accepting, inclusive space for everyone without qualification. Everyone is welcome regardless of gender identity, sexuality, race, or church activity. Whether you are an active member of the church, someone who is teetering on the edge, those with one foot in and one foot out, those who are no longer active, those who have become anti-church, or those turned away or alienated by the church, all are welcome. With that said, we do have some rules/expectations that everyone who wishes to participate must abide by. Our guiding principles are listed below.

These are the truths we hold as essential to Nuanced Mormon Ministries:

1. We are all children of Heavenly parents, both a heavenly father and mother.

2. There is no way to truly experience, commune with, or understand the divine while disregarding the divine feminine or treating is as secondary/lesser.

3. Jesus is the Christ, who came to teach his gospel of love and compassion that we strive to live by.

4. The Bible and the Book of Mormon, whether inspired or simply inspiring are core scriptures to our beliefs. Other scriptures (doctrine and covenants, pearl of great price, etc.) may be referenced but we hold them as secondary or simply auxiliary.

5. Ordinances are not relegated only to men, and we do not hold to the idea that only men can hold the priesthood or hold leadership positions.

6. Understanding, accepting, and including LGBTQ+ individuals/families is a requirement. While it may take adjusting and learning for some people, no amount of intentional homophobia or transphobia will be tolerated, and continued failure to learn from understandable mistakes will mean removal from the community.

7. Many people have different feelings and opinions about the Latter-day Saint church. It is not our objective to police those opinions. It is our expectation that we can remain respectful, even if we do not agree.

8. We do not hold that the latter-day saint church is the "one true church" and do not hold that the leaders of the church are prophets or apostles. If you hold those beliefs, you are still welcome to be part of the community but no amount of proselytizing or pressure to return/come to church will be tolerated.

9. We do not subscribe to or agree with the practice if polygamy. We hold polygamy in the same regard as the Book of Mormon does, that it is an abomination. While we hold no opinions about the practice of ethical non-monogamy/polyamory, we believe that the practice of polygamy is inherently abusive, its practice corrupted the Church, and has no place in our community.

10. We have chosen to include the word "Mormon" in our organization both to signal to others that we still hold the Book of Mormon as scripture, and as a reclamation of the term. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints no longer wishes to identify with that term, so we see no conflict with utilizing that term. We are "Mormon" in the eldest sense of the word, a people drawn together by love of the gospel and a belief in the Book of Mormon.

11. We do not subscribe to the essential nature of temples or the ordinances performed in them. If you do believe that, you are still welcome to participate, but again it is the expectation that you respect differing opinions about temples.
